Food waste project Orderli x SNN x React-EU

Every year, 55,000 tons of food is thrown away in the hospitality industry. In Europe, the hospitality sector is responsible for no less than 14% of all food waste. A growing number of hospitality entrepreneurs are committed to wasting as little food as possible. After all, there is a lot to be gained in the hospitality industry when it comes to food waste. During the Food Waste Challenge 2019, an average reduction of 21% in food waste was achievable among participants, with peaks of over 60%.

Through the Food waste project, Orderli makes entrepreneurs aware of food waste and motivates them to take action. Precisely because there is still so much to be gained, Orderli came up with the initiative that can help combat food waste.

With the help of Samenwerkingsverband Noord Nederland (Northern Netherlands Alliance), Orderli built a dynamic menu aimed at reducing food waste. By connecting the system to the inventory system, Orderli can display dishes with excess ingredients at the top or even recommend them with a pop-up or discount. This way, the application can prevent ingredients from expiring and having to be thrown away. At the same time, the software can also display products that are almost sold out less prominently, so that rarely anyone has to be disappointed. In this way, the guest is encouraged to choose or not choose certain dishes to combat food waste.

Even after the duration of the project, Orderli has not stopped promoting and implementing the dynamic menu. After all, this project has convinced us even more that the dynamic menu can make a major impact when it comes to food waste in the hospitality industry!

Now that all hospitality venues are fully open again and there is great enthusiasm among multiple hospitality venues for the dynamic menu, we are proud of what Orderli has achieved with this project over the past two years, despite the corona crisis.

For the future, we intend to continue innovating and continue looking for valuable ideas to make Orderli smarter, faster, greener and more sustainable!
